This plant, with a creeping rootstock grows around water however despite its name, the species is not limited to damp soil and can grow on relatively dry patches. It has strongly aromatic, narrow leaves, coarsely hairy with sparsely toothed edges. Small flowers are crowded into spikes at the tip of the stems, varying in colour from white to mauve.
