What’s coming up?

The Kirstenbosch Branch of the Botanical Society is a hub of conservation activity. We have regular events that you can join.

Sunday 17 May: Silvermine Dam walk

Meet at 9am at the Silvermine Dam parking area for a circular walk up to Noordhoek Peak. Duration 3.5hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 7 June: Chapmans Peak circuit

Meet at 8.30am at the East Fort to organise cars . Duration 4 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 12 July: Sandy Bay Nek

Sandy Bay Nek to Oude Schip Point, and back via the coastal route. Meet at 9am at the parking area on the top of Edgar road near Sandy Bay Nek. Duration 3.5 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 16 August: Tygerberg Hills to see spring flowers
Meet at the gate of the Tygerberg Nature Reserve at 9am. There is a small entrance fee to get in. Duration 3.5 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 6 September: Cape Point
Meet at the Capepoint entrance gate at 9am. Arrive 15 minutes early to avoid the queue to get in. Spring flowers along the coast. Duration 4 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 11 October: Brakkloofrand
Meet at 9am in the parking area next to the Garden of Remembrance in Kommetjie road in Fish hoek. Hike along Brakkloofrand overlooking Fishhoek and Glencairn. Duration 3 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

Sunday 8 November: Cape Point
Capepoint. Meet at 8.30am at the entrance gate. The route will be decided according to the weather. Duration 6 hours. Reasonably strenuous.

What do our conservation activities entail?

Hacks

– HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

While we no longer run a dedicated hacking group, the BOTSOC SA Kirstenbosch Branch continues to support invasive alien clearing efforts in collaboration with our partners and friends groups. Instead of regular monthly hacks, we now put out calls for volunteers whenever these groups organize alien clearing days around Kirstenbosch and nearby areas. If you’re passionate about conservation and want to lend a hand, keep an eye on our announcements and social media for upcoming opportunities to join these vital efforts.

HIKES

– Botanical hikes for BOTSOC SA Kirstenbosch members

Our projects aim to provide education about the world we live in, and how our plant life is the basis of all life. As such, we run botanical hikes for members led by experienced botanists and environmental scientists such as Tony and Pat Rebelo, as well as Dirk Muller.

Through these hikes, our members learn about our plant life, and what makes the Cape Floral Kingdom so special.

CREW

– Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers

CREW is a network of citizen scientists supported by BOTSOC SA who collect data on plant species of conservation concern to develop plans to protect them. You can join these CREW outings, to help find, identify and collect information on these species.

BIOBLITZ

– Participate in a BioBlitz

A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time.

At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers and other community members work together to get a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity. Watch our website and social media for details of upcoming Bioblitzes.
